University of South Africa (UNISA) Admission Requirements 2025-2026
When applying to the University of South Africa (UNISA) online, check whether you meet the statutory and college-specific admission requirements. Make sure you qualify for the required academic points score (APS) for your chosen qualifications. Below are the admission requirements under the various qualifications for the 2025-2026 applications;
Diploma Qualifications in Engineering
To be admitted for a Diploma in Engineering, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) (Diploma endorsement) with a rating of 4 in Mathematics or Technical Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy), English, Physical Science or Technical Science.
- N4 Certificate with Mathematics and Engineering Science, each with a minimum mark of 50%.
- Senior Certificate (before 2008) with at least a D symbol on the Higher Grade or a C symbol on the Standard Grade in Mathematics, Physical Science, and English.
- NC(V) National Certificate (Vocational) (Diploma endorsement) with English, Mathematics, and Engineering Science, each with a minimum mark of 50%.
- Higher Certificate in a relevant field.
Applicants who do not meet these requirements should consider applying for a lower-level qualification for which they meet the statutory and additional requirements.
Higher Certificate Qualifications
To be admitted for a Higher Certificate, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) with at least 30% in the language of teaching and learning and 40% in Mathematics.
- Senior Certificate with at least 30% in the language of teaching and learning and 40% in Mathematics.
- National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with at least 30% in the language of teaching and learning and 40% in Mathematics.

Diploma in Information Technology
To be admitted for a Diploma in Information Technology, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC) (Diploma endorsement) or equivalent with at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning and 50% in Mathematics, or at least N4 Mathematics passed with a minimum of 50% and N4 English, or N4 Communication, or N4 Communication Technology passed with at least 50%.
- Senior Certificate (SC) with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning, and with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in Mathematics, and a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in Physical Science, if any Physics or Chemistry modules form part of the curriculum of a selected qualification, or at least N4 Mathematics passed with a minimum of 50% and N4 English, or N4 Communication, or N4 Communication Technology passed with at least 50%.
Students must comply with all admission requirements, including the minimum APS of 18, and be eligible for admission into diploma studies. Applicants who do not meet these requirements should consider applying for a lower-level qualification.
Advanced Diploma in Engineering
To be admitted for an Advanced Diploma in Engineering, applicants must have completed one of the following:
- National Diploma in Engineering at NQF level 6 in the relevant field.
- 360 credit Diploma in Engineering at NQF Level 6 in the relevant field.
- Advanced Certificate in Engineering Practice in a relevant field at NQF Level 6 from an accredited provider of higher education.
- National or international equivalent qualification at NQF level 6 in the appropriate field.
Honours Degrees
To be admitted for an Honours degree, applicants must have:
- An appropriate NQF 7 qualification from an accredited provider of higher education.
- A minimum of 60% for the major(s) or for a selected number of NQF 7 modules in the qualification.
Advanced Diploma in Information Resource Management
To be admitted for an Advanced Diploma in Information Resource Management, applicants must have:
- An appropriate Diploma, National Diploma, or Bachelor’s Degree in IT or an ICT-related qualification field at NQF level 6 from an accredited provider of higher education, or a minimum of 60% of the completed coursework qualification that satisfies the vocational requirement of the Advanced Diploma qualification.
Master’s Degrees
To be admitted for a Master’s degree, applicants must have:
- An Honours degree, postgraduate diploma, or 4-year bachelor of science degree in the related field with an average of at least 60%.
- Applicants must first contact the relevant academic department to confirm the availability of a supervisor before applying for admission.
- Students who have not completed a module in research methodology may be required to complete such a module before the proposal for a Master’s degree is considered.
Doctoral Degrees
To be admitted for a Doctoral degree, applicants must have:
- An appropriate Master’s degree.
- Applicants must first contact the relevant academic department to confirm the availability of a supervisor before applying for admission.
NOTE: Meeting the minimum requirements for the postgraduate qualifications will not guarantee a place at Unisa, as the University can only enrol a limited number of students per qualification.
Required Documents To Apply Online At UNISA 2025-2026
Applicants who want to apply to start a new qualification at UNISA should upload all the required supporting documents below:
- A copy of your ID (RSA Applicants) and Passport ID (International Applicants)
- A copy of your School Certificate, i.e. Senior Certificate / National Senior Certificate.
- Provide a Sworn translation of documents if they are not in English or Afrikaans
- A copy of your Marriage Certificate or divorce decree if applicable
- Your official tertiary academic records are necessary
Unisa Online Application Procedure 2025-2026
Follow the steps below to apply online at the University of South Africa for the 2025-2026 academic year;
- Go to UNISA Online Application portal website at www.unisa.ac.za
- At the top menu of the page, go to the “Admission” tab
- Click on the “Apply for Admission” link. A page will open for you, carefully read the information you see on the screen.
- Then, Choose the qualification level in which you want to apply
- Another page will open for you again, read the information and click “View the Process“
- Read the information message, and make sure you qualify for the minimum entry requirements
- Proceed to ODL and UNISA, answer the questions and click “YES” if you have completed a qualification through UNISA distance learning.
- Click on “YES” if you are certain about your career.
- You then select your qualification level and continue to the next step
- Read the information and click on “CLICK HERE to apply online”
- Proceed to complete the application form.
