The University of South Africa’s academic year for 2025 is divided into semester bases to provide students with a structured timeframe to complete their coursework, prepare for exams, and meet academic requirements. The first semester is known as semester 1 and the second period is known as semester 2.

At UNISA, a standard semester typically lasts for about 6 months. This extended period provides students with ample time to engage deeply with their coursework and complete their assignments. At Unisa, semester 1 usually begins in January- June and semester 2, from July to November. Students are required to complete various assignments and examinations each semester, with deadlines and exam schedules provided by the university and assessments made throughout the semester.

Students who are not able to apply and register for semester one are allow applying and registering for semester 2 during the application period.

Unisa Semester One Application Date For 2025

  • Undergraduate Applications for admission to undergraduate qualifications for the 2025 academic year are to be open from 21 August to 11 October 2024.
  • Applications for admission to honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas for the 2025 academic year are to be open from 21 August to 11 October 2024.

     

  • Applications for admission to master’s and doctoral degrees for the 2025 academic year are to be open from 2 September to 22 November 2024 (some exceptions apply).

     

  • Application and registration for Unisa’s Short Learning Programmes are open from 14 May to 19 July 2024.

Unisa Second Semester Registration Dates For 2025

  • Undergraduate qualifications, honours degrees & postgraduate diplomas take place in January. The final date for initial minimum payments for semester 2 modules has been extended to July 2025.
  • Registration for master’s and doctoral qualifications for the 2025 academic year is open from January to April 2025 (some exceptions apply). Semester 2 registrations for the MBA and MBL qualifications will open in June and close in July 2025.
  • Application and registration for Unisa’s Short Learning Programmes will be open from January to March 2025.

Unisa Semester Application Required Documents 2025

All applicants starting a new qualification must upload all the required documents, which generally consist of the following:

  • Copy of your school qualifications (eg Senior Certificate, National Senior Certificate)
  • Copy of your official tertiary academic record(s) (if applicable) (internet copies will not be accepted)
  • Copy of your ID document (RSA students) or ID/passport (international students)
  • Copy of your marriage certificate (if applicable) or divorce decree (if applicable)
  • Sworn translations of documents if they are not in English or Afrikaans

How To Register For Unisa For 2025

If you are applying for undergraduate and honours, take note of the following before you proceed with your registration:

  • Applicants (new applicants & Unisa students who applied for admission to a new qualification) may only register if they have received an offer of placement from Unisa and have accepted the offer online. Unisa reserves the right to not process and/or cancel your registration if it is found that you were incorrectly admitted to a qualification.
  • Re-registering students must register for the 2025 academic year during the relevant registration period.
  • The university provides all registered students with a free myLife e-mail address. It is your responsibility to activate your myLife e-mail account as soon as your registration has been finalised. Your myLife e-mail account will be the only e-mail account recognised by Unisa for official correspondence to and from the university and will remain the official primary e-mail address on record at Unisa.
