Unisa will be offering an Advanced Diploma in Education in Intermediate Phase Mathematics Teaching from 2025. The primary purpose of the Advanced Diploma is to enable teachers to deepen their subject content knowledge related to teaching school mathematics. Interested students are strongly advised that Mathematics up to second-year level (NQF 6) will be highly beneficial.
A diploma in education is a qualification that is usually awarded through a technical or vocational school. This qualification in education usually takes about 18 months to acquire while a degree is usually studied over four years. A diploma in teaching will often allow you to specialize in a certain field of teaching.
The Unisa diploma in Education is an NQF level 7 qualification designed to fulfil a recognized need to provide a well-rounded, broad education that equips in-service teachers with the subject content knowledge base, pedagogical theory and methodology that will enable them to demonstrate competence and responsibility as academics and professionals.
A diploma in Grade R Teaching will allow you to teach Grade R children only. This means that if you do not have the time or funds to take a full degree in teaching, a diploma might be the right path for you.

What Requirements Do You Need To Teach With A Diploma In Education
You can teach with a Diploma in education should you possess the following requirements:
- Your APS score must be 15: To apply for a higher certificate, your APS score cannot be below 15. It must be 15 or higher.
- 30% in the course-based language: You must have at least 30% for the language that the course is taught. If the course is taught in English, you must have gotten at least 30% for English in matric.
- Matric Certificate: For a higher certificate you need a matric certificate.
- 40% in the home language in matric: You must have gotten at least 40% in your home language in matric.
How To Chose A Module For A Diploma In Education
Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF-level credits within a certain amount of time to graduate.
- Co-requisite: Module A is a co-requisite for Module B. You want to register for Module B but have not yet passed Module A. You must then register for both Modules A and B simultaneously. You may NOT cancel your registration for Module A unless Module B is also cancelled.
- Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.
You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits/modules per academic year and/or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.
The maximum number of credits does not include supplementary and/or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree / non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.
You must consider your available time when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance. You need approximately
- 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules.
- 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.
