What Are The Requirements To Study Teaching In Unisa? Requirements for teaching at Unisa

Unisa offers teaching programmes from the Bachelor of Education in the Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching and Higher Certificate in Education. For every module, there are admission requirements for each module. Unisa offers the largest range of education degrees in South Africa allowing students to follow a career as an early childhood, primary or secondary teacher.

Applicants may only register once they have received confirmation from Unisa that their application for admission has been accepted. Unisa reserves the right to not process and/or cancel your registration if it is found that you were incorrectly admitted to a qualification. Admission to the alternative qualification is not automatic. It will depend on whether you comply with admission requirements and if space is available.

Admission Requirements For a Bachelor of Education in the Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching
Your admission to Unisa is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) (Degree endorsement) with at least 50% in the language of teaching and learning and 50% in Mathematics
  • A Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption or qualify for the exemption from the Matriculation Board with at least a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning, and a D symbol on HG or a C symbol on SG in Mathematics
  • A National Certificate Vocational (NCV) level 4 with at least 60% in three fundamental subjects including the language of teaching and learning; 70% in four vocational subjects chosen from the NCV level 4 subjects. Subjects under the following categories are approved as eligible for a BEd degree: All official languages at the First Additional Language level, Agriculture and Nature Conservation, Business, Commerce and Management Sciences Services, Education, Training and Development.
  • Applicants who do not comply with the above requirements should consider applying for a Higher Certificate in Education if they meet the statutory and additional requirements.

PLEASE NOTE: ONLY a Higher Certificate in Education articulates into this programme.

Admission Requirements Needed To Study Teaching Higher Certificate In Education

Your admission to Unisa is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with at least 40% in the language of teaching and learning,
  • A Senior Certificate (SC) with at least an E symbol on HG or a D symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning,
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with an equivalent of at least 40% in the language of teaching and learning in terms of the NSC.
    Note: The Higher Certificate in Education is not a Professional Teaching Qualification.

This BEd degree is offered with Different streams/School Subject Combinations. Each combination is structured for a specific teaching field and students need to follow one of these.
