The University of South Africa, UNISA Advanced Diploma in Education is an NQF level 7 qualification created and developed to attain a recognized need to provide a well-rounded, broad education that prepares in-service teachers with the subject content knowledge base, pedagogical theory and methodology that will give them the ability to do something successfully or efficiently and become responsible as academics and professionals.
This qualification is designed to develop mentor teachers and lead professionals in teaching such as teaching and learning specialists and senior teaching and learning specialists; which is one of the target categories of educators stipulated in the Integrated Strategic Planning Framework for Teacher Education and Development in South Africa
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide a learning pathway enabling teachers who have completed a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree or an appropriate first degree capped by an appropriate Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), or a Pre-2009 Higher Diploma in Education, which will have focused on developing their subject content knowledge, to deepen their understanding of how to teach school mathematics more effectively.

Below are the minimum admission requirements to apply for the UNISA advanced diploma in Education for the 2025 academic year
- Diploma in Education (including a National Professional Diploma in Education) plus a cognate Advanced Certificate in Education, NQF Level 6
Or - Bachelor of Education
or - a General First Degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, NQF Level 7.
Or - A relevant qualification in the related field, NQF Level 7.
How To Apply For Unisa Advance Diploma In Education 2025
Follow the step-by-step guide below to apply online at Unisa in 2025-2026;
- You may apply for a maximum of two qualifications, ranked in order of preference (although you may only register for one should both of your qualifications be successful).
- Unisa will inform you of the outcome of your application. If successful, Unisa will indicate for which qualification you have been accepted and will offer you a space for the period for which you have applied (eg semester 1).
- You must accept or decline Unisa’s offer within the prescribed period. If you miss this deadline, Unisa will withdraw the offer and give your space to another applicant.
- First-time applicants to Unisa will be required to complete the First-Year Experience MOOC (massive open online course) before being able to accept Unisa’s offer.
- You may only accept one offer. This means that when you accept an offer for one qualification (irrespective of whether it is your first or second qualification of choice), the other offer will automatically fall away.
- If you accept Unisa’s offer, you must register for the period for which you have been granted admission. Should you not register for the relevant semester of study, you will need to re-apply for admission during the next application period.
