Unisa Nursing Requirements 2025-2026: 2025-2026 Unisa Nursing Admission Criteria: Eligibility & Application Process

The University of South Africa, Unisa offers courses in nursing from bachelor’s degrees, diplomas, higher certificates, and postgraduate and advanced diplomas in nursing and midwifery programs. The minimum requirement that an applicant needs to apply to pursue a career in nursing at Unisa includes passing Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Biology.

The healthcare industry in South Africa is constantly changing with new technologies and approaches. As the South African population keeps increasing, the demand for nurses and midwives is expected to grow further over the next decade. Unisa’s nursing and midwifery programs are evolving with these changes, ensuring that students graduate with their career ready.

Should you be able to come out as a Registered Nurse or Midwife, you can expand your skills and career opportunities through a range of postgraduate qualifications. This is your opportunity to have a positive impact on health outcomes, advance your leadership skills, and influence clinical practice and policy.

What Are The Requirements For Unisa Bachelor of Arts in Nursing Science?

The qualification stream for Health Services Management, Education, and Community Health, with the qualification code 0216X – HSM, is an NQF level 6 program that requires a total of 360 credits and is identified by SAQA ID 5365, with an APS/AS score of 20.

Students must, with every registration for the BA (CUR), submit their Annual Practising Certificate (issued by the South African Nursing Council (SANC) or Nursing Authority in the relevant country), indicating registration as a general nurse and a midwife. Students who are not registered as midwives may only register for BA (CUR)-HHS.

Neither an enrolled nurse nor an auxiliary nurse may register for this qualification. ENN103F has been replaced by ENG1503, students who have already passed ENN103F may not register for ENG1503.

The purpose of this qualification is to help students acquire skills, knowledge and experience to: solve problems in a professional communication context by working in a team and individually, managing administration, including financial administration, providing organizational support in a communications environment, and exercising ethical conduct, values and professionalism when dealing with clients. Qualifying students can therefore contribute to effective organizational communication and the quality of communication in the public and private spheres. This qualification will be presented via distance learning mode.

How To Choose A Nursing At Unisa Modules

Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF-level credits within a certain amount of time to graduate.

  • Co-requisite: Module A is a co-requisite for Module B. You want to register for Module B, but have not yet passed Module A. You must then register for both Modules A and B simultaneously. You may NOT cancel your registration for Module A unless Module B is also cancelled.
  • Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.

You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits/modules per academic year and/or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year. The maximum number of credits does not include supplementary and/or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree / non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.

You must consider your available time when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance. You need approximately

  • 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules.
  • 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.
