Unisa will be offering an Advanced Diploma in Education in Intermediate Phase Mathematics Teaching in 2025. The primary purpose of the Advanced Diploma is to enable teachers to deepen their subject content knowledge related to teaching school mathematics. Interested students are strongly advised that Mathematics up to the second-year level (NQF 6) will be highly beneficial.
Applicants should note that the Advanced Diploma in Education is not a “reskilling” qualification. If you want to change your subject specialization (e.g. you are currently an English teacher and you now also want to be able to teach mathematics), you are advised to apply for a BEd degree.
However, Unisa also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Inclusive Education. The purpose of this qualification is to build the knowledge base of teachers in inclusive settings for them to be conversant in this field of study and to equip them with relevant theoretical knowledge, teaching skills and assessment strategies to respond to the individual needs of learners.
All applicants are to take note of the admission requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma before they apply for admission. This qualification is not equal to a PGCE and is not considered a professional teaching qualification. Admission Requirements For Diploma In Grade R Teaching Qualification At Unisa 2025
Your admission to Unisa is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification:
- A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with at least a 40% in the language of teaching and learning,
or - A Level 4 National Certificate (Vocational) with a diploma entry endorsement or equivalent and at least 40% in the language of teaching and learning. A Level 4 or Level 5 Certificate,
or - A Diploma in Early Development may also be presented for admission and assessment about advanced credit standing with appropriate subject combinations and levels of achievement, as prescribed by institutions accredited to offer learning programmes that lead to the attainment and awarding of the qualification.
IN ADDITION, an official stamped proof of permanent employment (at least 12 months) in Grade R is required as per the Department of Basic Education requirement of the qualification. Failure to submit this document during application will disqualify you from admission. Volunteering or assistant positions do not qualify for admission.

Unisa Advanced Diploma in Education in Intermediate Phase Mathematics Teaching

Your admission to Unisa is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification:
- A four-year Bachelor of Education degree, or a general first degree or diploma, plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, or a former Higher Diploma in Education (Postgraduate).
- A former Advanced Certificate in Education (Level 6 on the former 8-level NQF) a former Further Diploma in Education which follows a former professional teaching qualification, or a former four-year Higher Diploma in Education.
- In addition, a new Advanced Certificate (Level 6 on the current 10-level NQF) which followed a former Diploma in Education (including a National Professional Diploma in Education) may also be presented for admission in an Advanced Diploma.
- Applicants who do not comply with the above requirements should consider applying for a lower-level qualification for which they meet the statutory and additional requirements.

Rules:
It is a requirement for students who intend on registering for this qualification to already be professionally qualified as a teacher. This Postgraduate Diploma is not a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) and, therefore, is not a teaching qualification. NB: This qualification will not be recognized by the Department of Higher Education and Training should you NOT have an approved 4-year professional teaching qualification.
Students who are already in possession of a completed Honours BEd in a cognate specialization cannot be admitted to the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning Care and Support as this qualification will not be recognized by DHET (Department of Higher Education and Training) for salary purposes or an additional REQV level.
It is the responsibility of the student to consult with the relevant Education Department districts or Provincial Education Departments on how to upgrade to additional REQV levels.
Students may be allowed to, on the completion of a Postgraduate Diploma, be recognized as meeting the minimum entry requirements for a cognate 180 credit Level 9 Master of Education on the condition that, holders of Postgraduate Diplomas complete required research modules namely Research in Education (RSE4801) and Research Project in Education(HREDU82) with a total of 48 credits for Non-Degree Purposes to meet the HEQSF research requirements of at least 30 research credits to obtain admission to a Master of Education degree. This is in addition to the prescribed admission requirements for the Master of Education degree.
The purpose of this qualification is to deepen teachers’ knowledge of psychosocial/mental health well-being, and ultimately provide them with the necessary skills to implement Care and Support for Teaching Learning (CSTL) in teaching and learning environments. Learners’ theoretical understanding is deepened and strengthened by interrogating, appreciating, and contextualizing the body of knowledge, observing human rights and taking African philosophies/Indigenous knowledge systems into consideration.
Project/problem-based work-integrated learning provides teachers with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge ethically within their scope of practice. Intellectual independence and accountability are fostered through critical reflection assisting learners to undertake leadership roles by acquiring the necessary skills to apply theory in practice. As a result, teachers are empowered to fulfil their roles as scholars, researchers and lifelong learners, as well as their community, citizenship and pastoral roles. Diploma In Teaching At Unisa
Qualifying learners will acquire counselling, case management, and project management skills to enable them: To pursue and sustain the psychosocial well-being of learners and teachers by rendering psychosocial care and support. Unisa Diploma In Teaching Application Requirements 2025
Applicants who are registering to Unisa for 2025 must make sure they meet the statutory registration of the qualification of which they have chosen and also meet the minimum academic points score (APS) for their qualification(s) of choice. Applicants are to upload all the supporting documents along with the registration forms. Below are the supporting documents needed for Unisa registration:
