Distinction at the University of South Africa is an academic honour or recognition given to students who achieve a high level of performance in their studies. Graduating with distinction means a student has done well in their studies, often by getting high grades or being one of the top students in their class.

Should a student obtain a higher mark in a written examination at Unisa, the grade given to him or her is termed as distinction. When you receive a distinction grade, it is equivalent to an A or A+. Before a student is awarded a distinction grade at Unisa, he/she is expected to obtain a higher grade consistently ( All A’s) in almost all modules and also show extra commitment, hard work and dedication which is recognised by the University’s authorities.

A student “passes” a module when they receive a final mark of 50% or above. A student “passes with distinction” when they achieve a final mark of 75% or above. A Unisa student “fails” a module when they receive a final mark of less than 50% and are not eligible for further supplementary assessment opportunities.

Modules passed with distinction are not reflected on the certificate. However, if a qualification has been obtained with distinction, this fact will be reflected on both the Advance Statement of results and the certificate.
