Is Unisa Funded By Nsfas In 2024?

The National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training established according to the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to provide financial support to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at public universities or TVET colleges.

Are you a South African student who is already studying at UNISA or you are now applying as a fresh student to study at Unisa for the 2024 academic year, are you facing financial challenges, or do you come from a family with an annual income of about R350,000, then Unisa permits you to apply for NSFAS?

Unisa students who want to apply for Nsfas for the 2024 academic year should start their application from the 28th of September 2023 to 31st of January 2024. Applicants are to make sure they meet all the application requirements of Nsfas and apply within the application period to avoid their application being rejected.

When Can Unisa Students Apply For Nsfas For 2024

It is the aim of Nsfas to provide assistance to Unisa students who are financially needy and academically deserving therefore from the 28th of September 2023, South African students studying at Unisa can apply for Nsfas funds. Nsfas application closing date for 2024, will be on the 31st of January 2024.

Who Is Eligible To Apply For NSFAS 2024 At Unisa?

The following category of persons are eligible to apply for the NSFAS funds at Unisa for the 2024 study season:

Prospective students who applied for admission to the 2024 academic year for a first undergraduate qualification.
Returning students who took a gap year in 2023 (ie did not study in 2023), who have an incomplete undergraduate qualification and who have not exceeded the N+ rule.
NSFAS approved returning and new students in 2023 who did not study during the 2023 academic year.
Students funded by other NSFAS bursaries who wish to switch to the NSFAS DHET grant.

Your NSFAS application will not be considered At Unisa if you:

received NSFAS funding in 2023.
have already completed an undergraduate degree or diploma.
are not South African citizens.
need funding for a Short Learning Certificate or Programme or a postgraduate qualification.

Who qualifies for the Bursary?

You qualify for an NSFAS bursary if you are a South African citizen who plans to study in 2024 or you are already studying at a public university or TVET college and you meet the following requirements:

SASSA grant recipients or
Your combined household income is not more than R350 000 per year or
A person with a disability with a combined household income of not more than R600 000 per year or
A student who began their university studies before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per year

Documents Needed To Apply For Nsfas At Unisa In 2024

You will need the following to complete your NSFAS application at Unisa:

Your own cellphone number and email address
Copy of your ID or birth certificate
ID copies of parents, guardian or spouse (If applicable)
Your proof of income or 1 year’s IRP5 (if applicable)
Your parents, guardian or spouse’s proof of income
If you are a SASSA grant recipient, no proof of income will be required
Applicants with a disability must submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form, click here to download
An applicant who is recognised as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form, click here to download.

If you are studying at the University of South Africa (UNISA) you will receive funding for:

Tuition
Books (subject to the number of modules registered)
Personal care allowance

How to apply For Nsfas Funds At Unisa For 2024

To apply for NSFAS 2024 online at Unisa, you will need to first register for a myNSFAS account and submit your application online. Follow the process below:

Go to the NSFAS website: www.nsfas.org.za
Click on the “myNSFAS” tab at the top right side of the NSFAS page
This takes you to the myNSFAS portal
Create myNSFAS account. If you don’t know how to create an NSFAS account, click HERE
Once your myNSFAS account is created, proceed and submit your application
Click on the “Apply” tab
Providing the required information
Upload the required supporting documents
Submit your online application for evaluation
