How Do I Select Study Units At Unisa 2025

At Unisa, a study unit is an academic module which forms part of your course of study, which represents a credit point value that contributes to your course. Your course program will state the total number of credit points you need to achieve (and often the specific units required) to attain your award. When you have enrolled in a unit, you are agreeing to undertake the required study and to complete the assigned assessment pieces as per the unit outline.

The 2025 registration period at Unisa has been open, therefore students who have gained admission are all urged to proceed to register as early as possible. Selecting a study module at Unisa is part of the registration process. In selecting a module, registrants are to make sure they do not exceed the prescribed number of modules per semester or year, if happens that way the registrations will not be processed. Please also consider Unisa’s re-admission rules when selecting your number of modules for the semester or year.

How To Select A Qualification And Choose A Module At Unisa 2025

Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a certain amount of time to graduate.

It is also very important that you manage your studies and can pass the number of NQF-level credits for which you register each semester or year. Please take note of Unisa’s admission and re-admission rules and the Unisa rules for students.

You must pass a minimum number of credits/modules annually so that you can re-register and continue with your qualification:

  • At least 36 NQF credits (3 modules of 12 credits each) in your first year of study;
  • At least 48 NQF credits (4 modules of 12 credits each) in your second or further years of study.

You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits/modules per semester:

  • At least 60 NQF credits (5 modules of 12 credits each) in a semester;
  • At least 120 NQF credits (10 modules of 12 credits each) per year for year modules. Unisa semester

The maximum number of credits does not include supplementary and/or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree/non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.

You must consider your available time when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance. You need approximately:

  • 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules;
  • 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.
