Postgraduate education consists of learning and studying for academic or professional degrees, academic or professional certificates, academic or professional diplomas, or other qualifications for which a first or bachelor’s degree is typically required.
Applications for admission to honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas at Unisa for the 2025 academic year will begin on the 1st of September 2025 and will close on the 14th of October 2025. Meeting the minimum requirements for the postgraduate qualifications will not guarantee a place at Unisa, as the
University can only enrol a limited number of students per qualification. Applicants must ensure that they meet the following requirements for a postgraduate qualification;
Master’s Degree:
An Honours degree, postgraduate diploma, or 4-year bachelor of science degree in the related field, with an average of at least 60%. Applicants must first contact the relevant academic department to confirm the availability of a supervisor, before applying for admission. Students who have not completed a module in research methodology may be required to complete such a module before the proposal for a Master’s degree will be considered.
Honour’s Degree:
- An appropriate NQF 7 qualification from an accredited provider of higher education. A minimum of 60%
for the major(s), or a selected number of NQF 7 modules in the qualification.
Doctoral Degree:
An appropriate Master’s degree. Applicants must first contact the relevant academic department to
confirm the availability of a supervisor, before applying for admission.
Unisa 2025 Online Application Requirements Into Postgraduate Courses
Everyone wanting to start a new qualification must apply for admission, including first-time Unisa applicants, Unisa students changing to a new qualification and/or changing the specialization of their current qualification, and applicants in their final year of an undergraduate qualification who wish to continue with postgraduate studies.
- All applications for admission must be submitted online. No self-help stations will be available for applications at the regional offices.
- Admission to a qualification is not automatic. It will depend on whether you comply with the admission requirements and if space is available.
- Only complete applications (application fee paid, if applicable, and all supporting documents successfully uploaded) will be processed.
- Students who obtain qualifications outside the borders of South Africa must have their qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and upload a SAQA certificate of evaluation during the application process (https://www.saqa.org.za). *** Final-year students (excluding Unisa students) who do not yet have an official academic record indicating completion of qualification must upload the official academic record to Unisa or submit it via e-mail to the relevant college e-mail address by 31 January 2025.
