The Advanced Certificate in Intermediate Phase Mathematics and English First Additional Language Teaching is a vocational-orientated qualification. It also provides a learner with the ability to apply their knowledge and skills to classroom teaching while equipping them to undertake more specialised and intensive learning.

The advanced certificate in education at Unisa 2025 is a certification that has a strong professional focus on getting teachers ready to teach math in the Intermediate Phase or to brush up on their content understanding of maths and English in the Intermediate Phase. There is an incorporated WIL component in this qualification.

It is one of the qualifications that have a strong focus on the workplace with an advanced certificate in intermediate phase mathematics and English first additional language teaching. The acquired knowledge places a strong emphasis on broad principles and how they are used in mathematics and English education.

The certification gives students pursuing teacher education a solid knowledge base for instructing English and Mathematics (FAL) in the Intermediate Phase.

Along with giving students the tools to engage in more intensive and specialized learning, it also gives learners the chance to apply their knowledge and abilities to classroom instruction.

Advanced Certificate Courses Requirements

Advanced Certificate in Intermediate Phase Mathematics and English First Additional Language Teaching applicants are to have the following to qualify them for the course at Unisa:

  • Qualification code: 90177
  • NQF level: 6
  • Total credits: 120
  • SAQA ID: 112663
  • APS/AS: 50
  • Maximum time to complete this qualification: 3 years

Admission Requirements For Advanced Certificate Courses In Education Unisa 2025

Your admission to Unisa is dependent on you meeting the specific admission requirements for your chosen qualification:

  • An accredited Bachelor of Education degree
    or
  • an accredited Postgraduate Certificate in Education (or a former Higher Diploma in Education Postgraduate),
    or
  • a minimum three-year Diploma in Education NQF Level 6,
    or
  • a minimum three-year Teacher’s Diploma NQF Level 6,
    or
  • a National Professional Diploma in Education NQF Level 5.

How To Register For Advanced Certificate Courses In Education Unisa 2025

Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF-level credits within a certain amount of time to graduate.

  • Co-requisite: Module A is a co-requisite for Module B. You want to register for Module B but have not yet passed Module A. You must then register for both Modules A and B simultaneously. You may NOT cancel your registration for Module A unless Module B is also cancelled.
  • Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.

You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits/modules per academic year and/or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.

The maximum number of credits does not include supplementary and/or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester. Modules taken for non-degree/non-diploma purposes also count towards the maximum number of credits allowed.

You must consider your available time when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance. You need approximately

  • 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules.
  • 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.

  • ACI2604 – Teaching Measurement in the Intermediate Phase
  • ACI2605 – Teaching Numbers and Operations in the Intermediate Phase
  • ACI2606 – Teaching Patterns, Functions, and Algebra in the Intermediate Phase
  • ACI2607 – Teaching Reading and Viewing in English as the First Additional Language (FAL) in the Intermediate Phase
  • ACI2608 – Teaching Space and Shape in the Intermediate Phase
  • ACI2609 – Teaching Writing and Presenting in English as the First Additional Language (FAL) in the Intermediate Phase
  • ACI2610 – Profiling the Intermediate Phase Teacher
