The 2025 applications for admission to Unisa’s undergraduate qualifications (higher certificates, advanced certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas & degrees) are currently open. The teaching course at Unisa falls under the Higher Certificate qualifications. Higher Certificates are usually industry-related courses that take about 1-3 years to complete. Many of the skills you learn are practical-based and work-related. This means that they will help you a lot in the workplace.

These skill-based qualifications can be completed with a matric certificate. It is important to remember that with skills-based qualifications like these, you’re more likely to find employment.

Higher Certificate In Teaching Course At Unisa

Before applying for your chosen higher certificate, here are a few things you need to know:

It’s an NQF level 5
You must complete it in 3 years
You will have 10 modules
Each higher certificate is made of 120 credits
Some higher certificates may require subject-specific marks. Possible in maths, life science etc.

Admission Requirements Needed To Apply For A Higher Certificate In Teaching At Unisa

These are the following requirements needed to apply for a higher certificate at UNISA:

A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with at least 40% in the language of teaching and learning,
or
a Senior Certificate (SC) with at least an E symbol on HG or a D symbol on SG in the language of teaching and learning,
or
a National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with an equivalent of at least 40% in the language of teaching and learning in terms of the NSC.
The Higher Certificate in Education is not a Professional Teaching Qualification.
